Mulberry Information System (MIS)

Mulberry Information System (MIS) is an information system for which different spatial layers with regards to Mulberry Sericulture are developed by using GPS and field survey in ArcGIS environment. One point layer is prepared in ArcMap platform by using latitude and longitude information collected with GPS. Each point in the layer represents location of mulberry plantation fields. Farmer’s names are entered in the attribute table of the point layer. The field photographs are also linked to the point layer. Different information related to variety of mulberry plants grown, different schemes of government, marketing places of cocoons, earning from selling of cocoon etc. are collected from farmers. These information are linked to the point layer and developed 4 layers namely Variety, Govt. Scheme, Marketing and GT layer. All these layers were used to develop MIS portal for four villages namely Chandrghat, Barbakpur, Tailpara and Khanpara representing Murshidabad, Nadia, Birbhum and Malda districts of West Bengal respectively. High resolution satellite data viz., GeoFen-2 (GF-2) and Cartosat-1 were used as background for displaying different information at farmers level.

Chandraghata village

In Chandraghat village S1, S1635 and local varieties are grown. Out of surveyed 628 farmer's field, maximum 410 fields are used for growing local variety and S1 variety is grown in 206 fields whereas S1635 variety is grown in 7 fields. Both local and S1 varieties are grown in 5 fields

Barbakpur village

In Barbakpur village, 252 fields were surveyed and it is found that in 246 fields, farmers grow S1 variety where as only 6 fields are used for growing variety S1635

Tailpara village

In Tailpara village 438 fields were surveyed where local variety is preferred more compared to variety S1 and S1635. Local variety is grown in 418 fields whereas only one farmer grows S1635 and S1 variety is grown in 19 fields

Khanpara village

In Khanpara village, 183 fields were surveyed and it is observed that farmers grow S1, S1635 and local varieties. In this village maximum farmers grow S1 variety in 126 field. S1635 variety is grown in 54 fields where as only local variety is grown only in 2 fields and both S1 and S1635 variety is grown by only one farmer
