{"id":14,"date":"2013-05-01T12:59:30","date_gmt":"2013-05-01T12:59:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silks.csb.gov.in\/aizawl\/?page_id=14"},"modified":"2023-02-14T05:06:09","modified_gmt":"2023-02-14T05:06:09","slug":"rearing-of-eri-silkworm","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/silks.csb.gov.in\/bhagalpur\/rearing-of-eri-silkworm\/","title":{"rendered":"Rearing of Eri Silkworm"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\" width:760px; height:650px; overflow:auto; margin:0px; padding: 0px 15px 0px 15px;\">\n<h1 align=\"center\">Techniques of Rearing of Eri Silkworm<\/h1>\n<h5>Rearing of Eri Silkworm, Samia ricini (Donovan)<\/h5>\n<h5>Rearing house<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Eri silkworms are reared indoor. <\/li>\n<li>The plinth area 10 m x 5 m size rearing house having tin or thatch roofing with 1.5 m varandah all around is ideal for accommodating 100 dfls for commercial silkworm rearing per crop.<\/li>\n<li>Rearing house should be well ventilated and fly proof.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Disinfection and prophylactic measures<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Disinfection before and after each rearing is considered the key for a successful cocoon harvest <\/li>\n<li> Disinfect the rearing house at least 7 days before and soon after the rearing.<\/li>\n<li>Disinfection should be carried out on bright sunny days.<\/li>\n<li>Wash the rearing houses and appliances with 5 % bleaching powder solution before rearing. Sprinkling of 2 % bleaching powder-lime mixture in the surroundings of the rearing house is equally effective.<\/li>\n<li> Fumigate with 5% formaldehyde solution under high humid condition.<\/li>\n<li>Open the room after 24 hours.<\/li>\n<li>Windows and ventilators should be kept open for proper aeration and free circulation of air.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Season:<\/h5>\n<p>Rearing can be done throughout the year. However, March-April and September-October are the best seasons for eri rearing.<\/p>\n<h5>Egg incubation:<\/h5>\n<p>Incubate the dfls at 24-26\u00b0C and 75-85% relative humidity.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\"  align=\"right\" src=\"https:\/\/silks.csb.gov.in\/jalpaiguri\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2014\/05\/Brushing-of-eri-silkworms.png\">\n<\/p>\n<h5>Brushing<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li> Wash hands with 2% formalin solution and then with water. <\/li>\n<li> Brush newly hatched worms on tender leaves (preferably castor) during morning hours.<\/li>\n<li> Use paraffin paper and water soaked foam pad in rearing tray to maintain temperature and humidity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Late stage rearing<\/h5>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\"  align=\"right\" src=\"https:\/\/silks.csb.gov.in\/jalpaiguri\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2014\/05\/Late-stage-silkworm-rearing.jpg\"><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rear maximum 300 nos. of 5th instar worms per 3 ft x 3 ft diameter tray.<\/li>\n<li> Low cost bamboo platform rearing equipment is the best for rearing late stage worms considering the limited rearing space and frequent bed cleaning. The structure with 6ft (L) x 5.5 ft (H) x 3 ft (W) dimensions can accommodate 25-30 dfls.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Feeding<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Feed 1st instar worms on tender, 3rd and 4th instar on semi-matured and 5th instar on matured leaves.<\/li>\n<li>Feed the worms\u2019 minimum 4 times a day with castor or kesseru leaves.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Bed cleaning :<\/h5>\n<p>Resort to bed cleaning daily.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\"  align=\"right\" src=\"https:\/\/silks.csb.gov.in\/jalpaiguri\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2014\/05\/Late-stage-silkworm-rearing-in-platform.jpg\"><\/p>\n<h5>Ripe worm collection<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li> Ripe worms become yellowish white and start roaming for selection of site for cocoon formation.<\/li>\n<li> While picking up the matured worms and rubbing in between fingers, a sound of hollowness is produced. <\/li>\n<li>Mature worms are collected and put to cocooning mountages.<\/li>\n<li>Besides traditional Jali, bamboo chandraki, bamboo stripe type mountage and plastic collapsible mountage are used for cocooning<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Source:<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Package of practices of Muga, Eri and Mulberry Sericulture for North Eastern region of India, 2005, Central Muga Eri Research &#038; Training Institute (CMER&#038;TI), Lahdoigarh, Jorhat, Assam.<\/li>\n<li>Dr. M.C.
